Warhammer 40,000 Army Lists / 750pt Tau list for a local tournament
« on: September 11, 2012, 04:19:10 PM »
Hi guys,

Been rapidly expanding my Tau collection lately. Its still a bit lacking in certain areas, but I have a lot of core stuff covered now.

So there's a tournament next weekend and I'd like a little help / advice about the army list.

Tournament is using rulebook missions, mysterious objectives, terrain, etc. Totally by the book.

I came up with three list ideas, and I'd be keen to get ssme feedback on them.

1. Gundam List

HQ Shas'el with Fusion/Plasma, Targetting Array, Multitracker, Target Lock, 2x Shield Drones
joining
Elite Crisis x2, one has Fusion/Flamer/Multitracker, one has Fusion/Burst/Multitracker

Elite Crisis x2, both with TL Missiles/Target Locks, squad leader with Shield drone and BS Filter

Troop Fire Warrior x6 plus a Shas'ui, with Photon Grenades and BS Filter

Troop Fire Warrior x6 plus a Shas'ui, with Photon Grenades and BS Filter

Heavy Broadside x2 with Adv Stabilizers, squad leader with Plasma Rifles, Multitracker, Target Lock, 2x Shield Drones

2. Plasma Spam

HQ Shas'el with TL Plasma, Target Lock, Stim Injector, BS Filter, 2x Shield Drone
joining
Elite Crisis x3 with TL Plasma / Target Lock

Troop Fire Warrior x7 plus a Shas'ui, with Photon Grenades and 1x Gun drone

Troop Fire Warrior x7 plus a Shas'ui, with Photon Grenades and 1x Gun drone

Heavy Broadside x1 with Adv Stabilizers, TL Plasma, BS Filter, 1x Shield Drone

Heavy Broadside x1 with Adv Stabilizers, TL Plasma, BS Filter, 1x Shield Drone

3. Long Range Skirmishers

HQ Shas'el with Missiles/Plasma/Targetting Array, Multitracker, BS Filter, 2x Shield Drones
joining
Elite Crisis x2 with Missiles/Plasma/Multitracker

Troop Fire Warrior x6 plus a Shas'ui with BS Filters

Troop Fire Warrior x6 plus a Shas'ui with BS Filters

Fast Pathfinders x5, 3x Rail Rifle/Target Lock, plus a Shas'ui with Photon Grenades and BS Filter
with
Transport Devilfish with Gun Drones, Dpods, Multitracker, Targetting Array

Heavy Broadside x1 with Adv Stabilizers, TL Plasma, BS Filter, Multitracker, 1x Shield Drone

All three lists feel very tight and limited to me, but i guess thats the nature of playing 750pts

Meaning you could hit other flyers OR hit the ground?

Any interest in this game? They made a big splash recently and all their stuff is up for order / preorder all over the place.

Models look slightly pricey, but they pulled a good move by making their core rulebook so amazingly cheap. =)

Doesnt the skyray kit come with a rail turret? I remember it used to, to the point it was always recommended to buy skyray instead of hammerhead as it would then come with every turret.

Yup. What I have is the Sky Ray kit, and the Devilfish that comes in the battleforce.

Really looking forward to this. I have a freind with an interest in Chaos who I can hopefully pawn the models off to, and, well, I can always turn those DA marines into BT marines.

Well, just to be clear, this isn't a serious list. This is just an exercise of trying to find the best force that I can from the models I own. =)

I have a whole laundry list of stuff that I want to get... suits, fire warriors, pathfinders, skimmers, etc. I just put in an order for two more crisis suits (found a nice deal on ebay) - which I am including below.

I tweaked a bit, and ended up with the following. This uses every model I own (and have on order) except for a few drones, and totals 1000pts:

Commander Shas'el - 127 pts
Missile Pods, Plasma Rifle, Targetting Array, Multitracker, 2x Shield Drone

Crisis Team - 124 pts
Missile Pods, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker
Missile Pods, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker

Commander will join the crisis team.

Stealth Team - 185 pts
Burst Cannon + Targetting Array, Burst Cannon + Targetting Array,
Team leader with Burst Cannon + Targetting Array, 2x Marker Drone

Fire Warrior Team - 130 pts
12x Pulse Rifle with Shas'ui

Kroot Carnivores - 84 pts
12x Kroot Rifle

Hammerhead Gunships  - 350 pts
Railgun, Smart Missiles, Multitracker, Target Lock
Railgun, Smart Missiles, Multitracker, Target Lock
(Have to proxy one of these two unless I can find a Hammerhead turret on ebay)

Warhammer 40,000 Army Lists / Tau - 1000pts on the Cheap
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:46:00 PM »
I'm not new at this hobby, but I'm coming back to it after quite a long time in the wilderness (and after selling all my miniatures).

I've just come back with the launch of 6th, and settled on Tau.
So I picked up a Tau Battleforce, and Sky Ray model kit for about $200 AUD  and then sat down and worked out that if I worked at it, I could make a 1000pt army out of it without much in the way of proxying.

My question to you guys is twofold...
  • how stupid is this 1000pt list?
  • what should I add to it next?
  • seriously, how stupid?

HQ

Commander Shas'o - 165 pts
  • Cyclic Ion Blaster
  • Plasma Rifle
  • Shield Generator
  • HW Multitracker
  • HW Drone Controller - 2x Shield Drone

ELITE

Stealth Team - 205 pts
  • Stealth Suit - Targetting Array, Burst Cannon
  • Stealth Suit - Targetting Array, Burst Cannon
  • Stealth Suit Shas'vre - Targetting Array, Burst Cannon, Markerlight, HW Multitracker, HW Drone Controller, 2x Marker Drone
Commander will join with this squad

TROOPS

Fire Warrior Team - 190 pts
  • Fire Warrior x 11 - Pulse Rifle
  • Fire Warrior Shas'ui - Pulse Rifle, HW Drone Controller, 2x Marker Drone

Kroot - 105 pts
  • Kroot x 11 - Kroot Rifle
  • Shaper - Kroot Rifle

HERAVY SUPPORT

Hammerhead Gunship - 175 pts
  • Railgun
  • Smart Missile System
  • Multitracker
  • Target Lock

Sky Ray Gunship - 160 pts
  • Smart Missile System
  • Multitracker
  • Targetting Array

Total is exactly 1000 points. Which is about 150 more than it really should be, I'm thinking.

How did you build those awesome diagrams? (This is me assuming you *didn't* do it all manually and used some kind of tool designed for the purpose)

Its awesome seeing someone using the Dark Eldar as that kind of super highly mobile force. :)

Besides, you'll only expect to have 1-2 ICs on your typical list (although, of course, you're going to have people spam them), and for normal 'sergent' type characters, LOS! is on a 4+.... so yeah, they might run with the leader at the front with the good armour save, but he's not going to be able to avoid that many wounds with LOS! rolls before he's toast.

Warhammer 40,000 Rule Queries / Re: IA Aeronautica: Hellstrike Missiles
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:37:37 PM »
Is my assumption correct that you can never fire more than one Hellstrike Missile and that all other weapons
can only be fired as snap shots?

The rule on ordnance weapons (page 51, CRB) is that what you're talking about only applies to ordnance weapons on non-vehicles.

I haven't gotten to play any games yet, so this is really just armchair speculation, but what do you think of the Seeker Missile + Markerlight combo against flyers?

Me, I think markerlights are one of the best features of the Tau army, and I tend to field as many of them as I can - they're a great force multiplier. So between a Sky Ray and a couple of Pathfinder units, I'd expect to have 10-12 markerlights on the field, and generally with a good enough range to cover most of the board, especially given how far zooming flyers have to move onto the battlefield when they arrive.

So you need 6s to hit with the markerlights... thats fair enough. But with up to 12 lights all firing at, it's reasonable to expect 1-2 hits... and it's pretty clear from the rules that a Seeker Missile is fired at a full BS of 5, even at a zooming flyer. And with S 8, and most flyers with 11 or 12 AV, a glance or a pen doesn't seem that unreasonable - especially since, with so many of our weapons being S5, we can't hope to take down AV12 flyers with massed small arms fire.

I don't know what the math would be, but for a Tau army it might just be our safest AA option until we get some FAQed skyfire rules or the new codex.

With the change in regrouping and increased usefulness of bonding knives, I'm not scared of the leadership tests as much anymore, except on my broadsides.

Now that Target Locks don't work anymore, I'm kinda feeling like its more likely to take Broadsides in units of 1 or 2 just for the sake of efficiency. Makes morale stuff for them a bit less of an issue, really.
