Warhammer 40,000 Strategy & Tactics / Re: Dark Eldar Troops in 6th
« on: July 25, 2012, 06:02:46 PM »
For Dark Eldar it's really going to be about quantity rather than quality of Troops.

I.e. 6x5x Wracks + 2x15x Guardians or something. Not exactly expensive and you can bring eight transports with those but your opponent isn't going to be able to lol them off the table at least.

They're still not a great unit though. I'd rather use mobility (i.e. veil on a different unit) to pick out units or just get straight up more firepower for the points. Precision striking on 6's is nice but not worth the extra investment I feel. I think you'd really need a 10-man unit to be effective and that's not cheap, they don't score or do anything else so are they really worth it?

Warhammer 40,000 Army Lists / Re: Acotez + Necrons - 1750
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:49:12 PM »
The crons have carried the day so far which is what worries me a bit - a for the balance of full cron armies and b for when someone can finally deal with 12 MEQs when I drop them from transports.

Currently thinking of dropping a Psyfledread + 2 Aco squads for:
2x 8x Psykers w/1x Acolyte w/Chimera

Improves my anti-infantry ability, ability to deal with deathstars and number of bodies (though I'm likely to lose one squad a game from perils) but still maintain roughly the same firepower with the Chimeras and S10 AP1 blasts against tanks over the loss of Psybacks + Psyfledread.

More info on models:

Eldar Warpspiders/Everguard

5 per box

Spiders: whole squad looks like the old exarch, no huge weapon, helmets smaller, but same shape, wrist blades, two small spinner weapons on rod mount from the back. Spider web like straps on the chest that hold the backpack (doesnít look as broad as the old version), running, jumping and slightly cowering poses, exarch has extra pair of weapons on the cover, donít remember the back pictures

Everguard: aspect warrior body with runes on the chest, same collar as warpspiders but no mandible arcs and gas masks, different more warlock-like face plate and small arc at back of the head, double bladed two-handed spears, very dynamic models, jets from the side/underside of the backpack, squad leader has larger head-arc, mantle hangs over the backpack, flies in the wind

Eldar Sky Charriots/Shining Spears

3 per box, look like small vypers, slightly larger than jetbikes. Two parts: an engine part with jetbike-like canopy but in the shape of a dragon, owl and hawk head, sideway jets, and a distinct winged chariot part, parts are connected by arcs.

Riders either warlocks but arms are not robed, spear, sword and staff; or shining spear aspect warriors with lances, shining spears have smooth canopies with gems instead animal heads, helms look very cylon-like, have collar-like shoulderguards

Eldar Jetbikes

3 per box, the same pose as dark eldar jetbike, guardian riders with smaller helmets or bareheaded with lots of flying hair (80s heavy metal mane) and without backpack, vyper-esque smooth canopy, jet and wings have the same design as a falcon grav tank, underslung twin shuriken catapults and/or serpent-shaped bladehooks, some riders have axes with a hole in the blade

Eldar Dragon Riders

3 per box, very slender lizard mounts not unlike slaanesh steeds, all female rider, no helmets, long braids, guardian armor without backpack, all have shining spear lances, sabres and/or sniper rifles as sidearms, the armor has no decoration, not even gems or small bubbles, only exception is a gem that holds a cloak that falls to the left side of the rider, very simplistic look, not aztec or tribal at all

Eldar Wraithguard/Cataphracts

3 per box, look like old versions but have two rods for upper arms and thighs instead of just one, some have feet, some hooves, large fins at the back

Cataphracts: float/fly, fluttering cloth pieces instead of legs, wing-shaped shields and spears, segmented/armored head

Eldar Swooping Hawks

5 per box, larger wings, not so stiff and two-dimensional, several straps of clothes from the loin, wrists and ankles, model stand on these straps, both shoulder plates have inbuilt missile racks, Exarch has two shoulder-mounted blasters and a scimitar in one hand and two optional rifles, one is the same as the old exarch had, the other is a small star cannon

The Avatar of the Young King

Completely new design, much smaller, only as large as a wraithguard, set of aspect armour where every piece is spread out and connected by a body of magma, looks like an fire/earth elemental clad in a suit of armour, dire avenger helm with fire from the eyes and half burnt helm crest, floats and torso pose looks like vader during his Noooo scream, hands are armored, blood is dripping from the left, the right is molten and transformed into a blade

Eldar Warlock

fits the current warlocks but sharper robe edges, hadouken pose but with staff in two hands

Eldar Spirit Warrior

wraithlord-war walker mix, trygon base, running bird legs with hooves, huge scaled torso, a dozen poles extend from the back (like wraithlord but three times as much), left forearm replaced with massive lance, right hand holds extra handle on lance shaft or a three pronged swastika blade. Lower back, left shoulder and part of the left arm are concealed by an impressive cloak, head is surrounded by scaled armour plating, large gem at the front, doesnít bend upward towards the end but downward, whole model leans forward, chest can be opened, female pilot inside

Eldar Phoenix Lord Nuadhu, The Fireheart

nuadhua holds lance upright, one end on the ground, points with axe on something, shining spear helm with tail of hair, layered armour like dark eldar-armour but with smooth curves, can be placed on vyper-variant, looks very similar to a vyper, canopy more segmented and wings in falcon-style, one large jet engine, chariot platform on the back, two large pennants

Eldar Webway Gate

Two arcs that almost touch each other at the top, whole construct has hazelnut shape, pyramidal platform with oval basis, several destroyed columns, front columns are intact and carry swooping hawk and dark reaper statues, whole model is covered with thorn-twines (seems to be optional)

Eldar Dire Avenger Xentarch

holds two handed samurai sword downwards, two wrist-mounted shuriken catapults, banner, 99% that the phoenix on it is modeled on, one foot stands on a rock with an owl next to it, all armour plates are bedecked with a rune pattern, donít know if this is only painted on

Eldar Howling Banshee Xentarch

golfer pose, bends forwards and slashs upwards with a sabre, stretches other arm straight into the air, holds tri-swatiska, has snakes woven into her hair

Eldar Striking Scorpion Xentarch

jumps forwards, holds two short but thick chainswords in front, back of armour has backbone-like element that looks like a scorpion tail, continued on the helmet and ends in a sting, stands on ornamented plate with roots on it

Eldar Fire Dragon Xentarch

knees almost, holds very long pike with two hands ready to fire, huge cluster of grenades on his back and his belt, helm ends in a dragon head

Eldar Lamia Strike Fighter / Moon Siren Bomber & Eldar Black Warden

already described

Warhammer 40,000 Army Lists / Acotez + Necrons - 1750
« on: July 24, 2012, 06:48:18 PM »
People were interesting about this on the Bawks so posting here as well.

Parent List Ė
Inquisitor Coteaz
6x5x Acolytes w/Bolter, Razorback w/Psybolt Ammunition, 5x Searchlights
3x Psyfledreads

Allies Ė
Necron Overlord w/Warscythe, Mindshackle Scarabs, Command Barge
2x Crypteks, Harbringer of the Storm
2x5x Immortals w/Guass, Night Scythe
Doom Scythe

Totals: 1750 points
13 vehicles
44 infantry

Not a huge fan of the Acolytes, quite fragile though if gives you nice access to TL S6 firepower on the cheap. Psyfledreads support, Coteaz giggles with psychic support and Necrons fill out the list with some not-chaff units which bring more scoring, mobility, anti AV14 and extra dakka.

Love what the Necrons, particularly over the Warriors I've been using normally. The S5 guass and 3+ save plus staff is adding that extra bit of durability and punch I think the list has needed though Traveller in place of the normal Overlord wouldn't go amiss either...

It all comes back to the Acos though and whether or not they can stick around on objectives...

Veyr understandable re: Guard & Allies. Best way to do this IMO, is borrow stuff from friends :P.

You don't need the extra combi-plasma on Wolf Guard for the Long Fangs.

You can also trim the Grey Hunter units to 7-8 strong rather than full. Trimming the Seraphim is probably the best bet for getting points IMO.

« on: July 23, 2012, 03:46:43 PM »
I'm not sure which blog author would be most familiar with SoB (if any are) so I'm sending this to you. I'm rather curious about how 6th ed changes SoB, especially with the addition of allies.

Here is what I'm thinking of playing so far:

HQ: 115pts
St. Celestine: 115pts

Troops: 350pts
10x Sisters: Flamer, Flamer, meltabomb, rhino: 175pts
10x Sisters: Flamer, Flamer, meltabomb, rhino: 175pts

Fast Attack: 450pts
10x Seraphim: 2x Flame Pistols, melta bomb: 200pts
5x Dominions: 2x Melta, Meltabomb, Rhino: 130pts
5x Dominions: 2x melta, Meltabomb, Rhino: 130pts

Heavy Support: 355pts
2x Exorcist: 270pts
5x Retributors: 4x HB: 85pts

Total: 1280pts

Rune Priest: Chooser of the Slain, Force Sword, Runic Armour, Wolf Tooth Necklace: 140pts

5x Scouts: Bolters, Plasma Gun: 90pts

9x Grey Hunters: Melta, MotW, Wolf Standard, Rhino: 200pts

Heavy Support:
6x Long Fangs: 5 Missiles: 140pts

Total: 570pts

Grand total: 1850pts

The way I see it is that with everyone having krak missiles there's not much use in having melta except against LRs and similarly high AV targets. You might as well just charge them (72% chance of success at 6") and nuke them, which can also potentially kill all of the occupants if you manage a good enough spread. I added lots of flamers because sisters really hate close combat, especially with the WD book. If you're going to charge them then prepare to take some flamer hits. They also help with taking out enemies that have had their ride destroyed.

Exorcists are there for obvious reasons. One weapon vehicles aren't quite as bad as before and with AP 1 they still have a fairly good chance at smiting a low AV vehicle in a single round. Retributors are there because I lack a third exorcists and mass rending shots are generally fairly nice. I gave each unit a meltabomb to use in case of walkers or MCs so that they have something more effective than krak grenades.

For allies I chose Space Wolves, mostly because I already have them and they help a lot in terms of psychic defense. The rune priest is designed more for challenges than anything else, having runic armour to stop power weapons. While he probably can't stand up to a dedicated close combat character (unless it lacks a 2+ save) he should be able to kill enemy sergeants fairly well. Also, good luck hitting his unit with psychic powers because I don't think runic weapons stop you from using Deny the Witch (same with Runes of Witnessing).

I chose Grey Hunters to be his escort unit as they're the better troop choice in the SW book and I gave them a meltagun in case they need to face down a tougher target (and lack of points for a plasma gun) and then the MotW and a Wolf Standard to help them out in close combat because they're the only unit in the army that other than Celestine that doesn't cry if a single space marine reaches them (at least in my experience in 5th) so by default they're my main counter-charge unit for the most part.

The scouts are there because having a 8/9 chance of choosing a board edge is great and they have a plasma gun because of the virtues of hitting RAV or back end MCs with multiple S7 AP2 shots.  Essentially they're a cheap suicide squad.

The long fangs are around to assist as additional ranged fire support. SoB tend to be a fairly short ranged army so having a 4th unit that can reach out and touch someone effectively from beyond 12" is pretty nice.

Thank you for you time.

Sisters are still bad unfortuantely but they do have a couple things going for them. Dominions and Celestine are two which you are using so, good. I'd run the SoB with melta - flamers forces them to get really close whilst you can still melta from the top-hatch. Less useful on infantry than it was but still good.

My issue goes with the choice of Allies. This might be a restriction on what you have but Imperial Guard would be an excellent choice. Drop the Seraphim for another Dominion squad and Celestine now has a huge blob with which to ferry herself into combat with. Which is Fearless. Chuck in some Power Axes on Sarges and Priests w/Eviscerators and you have a cheap Fearless unit which can hurt stuff (Krak grenades will help laugh at tanks as well). Then use extra points for HWT to shore up your scoring, a Vendetta and potentially something from heavy support (Manticore if you want to be brave, Hydra for extra anti-air, etc.).

Now, if you don't want to do this. I'd still prefer something like Blood Angels or Space Marines where you can combat squad for more Troops. If you want to stick with Wolves though, get a 2nd Grey Hunter unit. I'd probably replace the Scouts with Wolf Guard so you can bring double weapons for them - you still have the Seraphim + Celestine for backfield distraction. I'd run Plasma on them as well - you have good melta elsewhere.

Warhammer 40,000 Email Replies / 1500 Eldar w/ Dark Eldar Biker
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:34:17 PM »
First off, HUGE fan of your blog. I read it everyday, and as I'm stuck in India at the moment. I read it even more. You guys are really insightful especially you, your Tyranids post was spot on in my opinion and a lot of people couldn't present it as well as you did. Anyways enough fanboying around I don't mean to make you uncomfortable. Just a really big fan. So with 6th out here is the list I'm planning on toting around. I've always liked two types of Eldar: Jetbikes and foot lists, but I usually pick one or the other. Also since I have Craftworld and Dark Eldar (what elves are cool) I decided to mix the two together for a cool fast deadly list. So without further ado, here is the list.

-Doom/Runes of Warding

-Hex Rifle

6x Trueborn
-2x Dark Lances

6x Guardian Jetbikes
-2x Shuriken Cannons

6x Guardian Jetbikes
-2x Shuriken Cannons

10x Warriors
-1xDark Lance
-Raider (Splinter Racks)

10x Warriors
-1xDark Lance
-Raider (Splinter Racks)

Fast Attack

6x Reaver Jetbikes
-2x Blasters

Heavy Support

Fire Prism

Fire Prism

Razorwing Jetfighter

Puts me at about 1493

What do you guys think about this list I have 8 lances 2 blaster lances (18inch assault lance) 2 fire prism shots and 12 S6 mobile shots not to mention tons of poison.
What do you feel? It looks like not really enough survivability or firepower but I really do have crazy movement.

Basically Farseer and Haemeo go with Trueborn squad. The rest works itself around the table.

Do you have any idea on how to make this list more effective?  I feel there is something really missing from this list. But I don't know what.

Always your fan,

Missing? Fire Dragons ^^.

I'd run the Warriors as medium Wrack units instead - cheaper and leaves points elsewhere. The Trueborn aren't really needed as a one-off unit so I'd drop them (Seer + Haemon go with Wrack units, Haemon starts with Reavers) and look to get 2x Dragons in Wave Serpents. You're going to need to drop something else though and that would most likely need to be the Razorwing (you want two Prisms if you take one) or both Prisms and look to do something else with those points (Falcon with small Dire Avengers in it?).

Either way though, I don't think it will be hugely awesome. Eldar + DE are weak in Troops and this isn't any different. Best way I could see these two being used is likely DE parent with 6x Troops and Eldar adding in two Avenger Serpents or Pathfinder squads and then a Bike Council. You don't get the Bike troops but you get the Bike Council which hits your bike theme. Not likely to really work super well at 1500 though...

Warhammer 40,000 Email Replies / Nob Biker and Tau
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:20:17 PM »
Hi Kirby!

I am a long time reader of your blog and need your advice :-)

Yesterday I had the idea of creating a Nob or normal Ork Biker List
with Tau long range support as I think Ork Bikers will be really cheesy
again. And at the same time I think, Tau will give great fire support.
Can you help me building a list like this, as I have no experience with
Nob or Ork Bikers.

The bikers would then act as fast troop choices who put pressure on far
away mission markers and maybe 2 firewarrior teams to defend the base
and act as bubble wrap for the suits. What are your thoughts on this
combo? I think it could be really cheesy now. I'm not sure about the
colossus team since target lock is gone now.

Thank you!

Take a standard Tau list minus the Kroot really. Something like:

10 Crisis Suits (plasma + missiles are still best bet though TL-missiles are a good second choice to save some points)
6 Broadsides (take shield dones)
2-4 Piranhas

Add in some Fire Warriors as they are much improved, maybe 3 squads?

Then add in an Ork Warboss + Nob Biker unit and a large Shoota Boyz unit to become the new Kroot. Spare points can go into more Fire Warriors, Devilfish or Kroot to back-up the Shoota Boyz. You could also go lol funwith shield dronesin Crisis units.

How would you run a competitive 1500 space marine list that has to include 3
units of stern guard?

I was thinking something like list 1:

Librarian, null zone, the avenger.
5 stern guard, 3 combi meltas, 2 combi plasmas, rhino.

6 stern guard, 3 combi meltas, 2 combi plasmas, rhino.

6 stern guard, 3 combi meltas, 2 combi plasmas, rhino.

10 tacticals, combi melta, melta, multi melta, rhino.

10 tacticals, combi melta, melta, multi melta, rhino.

Predator, lascannon sponsoons.

Predator, lascannon sponsoons.

Or list 2:

Pedro kantor
3 honour guard, rhino.

6 stern guard, 3 combi meltas, 2 combi plasmas, rhino.

6 stern guard, 3 combi meltas, combi plasma, rhino.

10 tacticals, melta, multi melta, rhino.

10 tacticals, melta, multi melta, rhino.

predator, sponsoon lascannons.

Predator, sponsoon lascannons.

Thankyou in advance!

Heavy Support for both lists is something I'm not liking. ACLC Preds are best with BA as are Vindicators, even with new vehicle rules. A bit better than they were but their other options are still probably better.

The Pedro list has way more scoring power so I'd probably lean towards that list. Drop the Honor Guard, turn the Predators into Dakkas and drop the Vindicator. Add the 3rd Sternguard unit in.

I feel the best option is to then ally in Blood Angels.

BA can bring in another Sternguard unit (more scoring), a Libby (or Mephiston) for psy defense + utility and the fast Vindicator. Other points can go into Attack Bikes/Land Speeders for more mobile anti-tank (can be from Space Marines). Grab some ASM in Rhinos for Troops or a cheap Scout squad (likely the better answer in terms of point constraints).

Warhammer 40,000 Email Replies / Help with army list [Tyranids]
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:12:02 PM »
Hi there Mr. Kirby,
I was tasked with making a list for my mate who plays 'Nids but since I don't know much about the army I am imploring for your assistance. This is what I've come up with:

HQ1: Hive Tyrant, Wings, 2 x TL Devourers, Hive Commander (285)
HQ2: Hive Tyrant, Wings, 2 x TL Devourers (260)
Elites 1: 3 Zoanthropes (180)
Elites 2: 2 Hive Guard (100)
Elites 3: 2 Hive Guard (100)
Troops 1: Tervigon, Adrenal Glands, Toxic Sacks, Toxic Miasma (210)
Troops 2: Tervigon, Adrenal Glands, Toxic Sacks (195)
Troops 3: 10 Termagants (50)
Troops 4: 10 Termagants (50)
Fast Attack : Harpy (160)
Fast Attack : Harpy (160)

One Flyrant has Hive Commander in case the opponent has a lot of flyers, the FMCs  will stay in reserves and hopefully shoot down something when they come on the table. Also this way the Tervigon can outflank which is fun for Linebreaker.

For Psychic Powers I am thinking about Biomancy for the Flyrants (mainly for self buffing for protection with Iron Arm and Endurance) and Telekinesis for the Zoanthropes (mainly to deal with flyers with auto-hit powers like Assail and Mechanicum). In case of too many flyers the Flyrants might take Telekenisis too and in case of no or too few vehicles Zoanthropes can take Biomancy (multiple Enfeebles + Toxic Miasma is fun as we found out in a game VS my orks the other day).

My mate really likes his Harpies by the way. Not sure how useful they are now but but I am guessing there is going to be a shift to more infantry based armies (or see more infantry in general) so 2+D3 pie plates couldn't hurt. Also make a good FMC saturation along with the Flyrants.

I think the list scales up nicely to 2000 points with the addition of another 10 Termagants + Tervigon.

Please let me know what you think of this.

Thank you for your time,
Lefteris "The Antipope" Gavalas

Harpies are still pretty meh I feel, so unless he's really set on them and already has models, I'd lean away from them tbh. I don't feel you need Hive Commander either - Flyrants are already expensive and if you want to reserve deny, a 3+ is still pretty good. Tervigon doesn't need Miasma either - extra points here can go into Gants (bigger starting squads aren't a bad thing anymore) or another Hive Guard.

If you don't end up taking Harpies, Dakkafexes or Gargoyles are both solid choices which could replace them. Without a Prime I'd probably go with the Gargs and buff up the Hive Guard squads.

As seen on 3++! ->

Been informed there are some Eldar boxes floating around warehouses. How long they get sat on before a codex is released though, who knows. I'm going to guess around a year off. We know CSM are next and then Dark Angels with the Hobbit crashing into scenes December, that could push DA back to early 2013. So mid 2013 is the likely bet for Eldar is something doesn't shove them out of the way.

Here's what I've been told re: boxes. No rules.

plastic Warpspiders/Everguard
plastic Skycharriots/Shining Spears
plastic Phantomwaechter
  - these might be the shadow spectres?
plastic Jetbikes
plastic Wraithguard/Cataphracts
plastic flyer combi-kit
- The flyer is pretty large and has a crossbow shape, two canopies, one fin. The main variant on the cover has some lances and a large dorsal distort cannon. The other variant has extra downward/sideway thrusters, but I donít remember if it has a different weapon loadout.
plastic phoenix lord niadhau  - For Shining Spears, appears to be on a Vyper jetbike.
plastic webway gate
resin box Avatar
resin Black Warden
- The Black Warden looks like an female Autarch. She has a shurikencatapult and a feathered guardian helm with an eye on it.
resin Dire Avenger Xentarch - Appears to be a new English name for Exarch?
resin Howling Banshee Xentarch
resin Fire Dragon Xentarch
resin Striking Scorpion Xentarch
resin box Dragon Riders
resin box Eldritch Raiders
- They look like guardians but have no helms and wear scarfs around the lower head and swashbuckle belts. They are very individually equipped, have all sorts blades, pistols and/or rifles. (potentially Storm Guardians?)
resin box Halcones Cazadores
resin Warlock

Have at it!
